Net metering is a billing arrangement in which a grid-tied solar owner receives credits from the utility for surplus electricity exported to the grid, then draws those credits against consumption during periods when local generation falls short.(Source: IEA)

Why it matters for the financial case for solar

Net metering directly affects the economics of owning a solar installation. Without a compensation mechanism of some kind, surplus generation exported to the grid is given away for free. With net metering, each unit sent to the grid offsets a unit billed later, which can meaningfully reduce the net cost of grid electricity over a billing period.

How much it reduces your bill depends entirely on your local tariff structure and the specific rules of your utility or regulator. Compensation rates, credit carryover periods, and annual true-up rules differ country by country and often state by state or region by region. They also change over time as policy priorities shift. Check your local regulations before making any assumption about the financial return.

Net metering requires a grid-tie installation: the inverter must meet the anti-islanding and interconnection standards required by your local grid operator, and a net meter (or bidirectional meter) must be installed by the utility before credits can be tracked.

Net Metering in practice

Key numbers

Net metering credits are calculated in kilowatt-hours. A Genixgreen LiFePO4 home storage system holds about 5 kWh to 16 kWh of usable energy (usable capacity is roughly 85 percent of nameplate, given a depth of discharge of 80 to 95 percent combined with one-way efficiency of 90 to 95 percent). Adding battery storage to a solar-plus-net-metering installation lets the owner decide whether to export surplus generation for credits or store it locally for later use, depending on which the local tariff structure rewards more.

Net metering vs self-consumption

Self-consumption means using the solar electricity you generate on-site rather than exporting it. Net metering is the mechanism that assigns value to what you do not consume on-site. The two strategies can work against each other: maximizing self-consumption means exporting less, which reduces net metering credits. The better strategy depends on the relationship between your local import tariff rate and your net metering credit rate. In some markets self-consumption delivers more value; in others the credit rate makes exporting worthwhile. Off-grid systems operate entirely without a grid connection and have no access to net metering at all.

How Genixgreen uses Net Metering

Genixgreen has built LiFePO4 storage in its own factory since 2011 and ships to 100+ countries, with local stock in Odesa for delivery across Ukraine. Adding a Genixgreen battery to a grid-tied solar installation lets the owner time exports and self-consumption strategically, whether the local tariff rewards net metering credits or prioritizes on-site use. The battery adds resilience regardless of how the net metering rules are structured in your market.

Related terms

Grid-tie: the prerequisite interconnection mode that net metering requires

Self-consumption: the alternative strategy of using solar on-site rather than exporting it

Off-grid: operating without a grid connection, which means net metering is unavailable

Explore the Genixgreen product range to see LiFePO4 storage systems compatible with grid-tied solar

Back to the Energy Storage Glossary

Sources

IEA: Solar Energy: Mapping the Road Ahead.
