Load shifting is the practice of storing energy during low-cost or low-carbon grid periods and consuming it later during high-cost or high-demand windows, deliberately moving when a site draws from the grid without necessarily reducing total consumption.

Why it matters for electricity cost management

Electricity is not priced uniformly. Most commercial and residential tariffs in markets with time-of-use pricing charge more during afternoon and evening peak hours and less overnight or on weekends. A battery that charges cheaply and discharges during expensive hours functions as a financial buffer against variable grid pricing, allowing a site to consume the same total energy while paying a lower effective rate.

The same logic applies to carbon intensity. When the grid is running on abundant renewable generation, charging then and discharging during fossil-heavy peak periods lowers the effective carbon footprint of a site’s consumption. The financial case depends entirely on local tariff structure; check your own rate schedule before sizing a system. (Source: U.S. DOE Office of Electricity, Energy Storage)

Load Shifting in practice

Key numbers

Genixgreen LiFePO4 systems suited to load-shifting schedules run at a nominal 51.2 V and are rated for 6000+ cycles, scaling from about 5 kWh to 16 kWh for homes and into the MWh range for commercial sites. Usable energy is about 85 percent of nameplate: depth of discharge runs 80 to 95 percent, combined with one-way discharge and inverter efficiency of 90 to 95 percent. System round-trip efficiency for a full charge-and-discharge cycle is about 90 percent. Cycle life is rated to the 80 percent capacity end-of-life point. Because load shifting typically cycles the battery once or twice daily, the 6000+ cycle rating translates directly into years of scheduled operation.

Load shifting vs peak shaving

These two strategies are complementary but distinct. Load shifting changes when a site draws from the grid: it stores energy during a cheaper or cleaner window and discharges it during an expensive or high-demand one. Peak shaving cuts the size of the highest demand spike, targeting the brief interval that can set a demand charge for an entire billing period. In practice, a commercial battery controller often runs both simultaneously: charging during off-peak hours (load shifting) while also suppressing the demand-charge spike (peak shaving). The right mix depends on whether a site faces time-of-use rates, demand charges, or both.

How Genixgreen uses Load Shifting

Genixgreen has built LiFePO4 storage in its own factory since 2011 and ships to 100+ countries, with local stock in Odesa for delivery across Ukraine. Every Genixgreen battery includes an integrated BMS that tracks state of charge in real time, enabling charge and discharge scheduling around time-of-use windows. The modular architecture scales capacity to match the kWh needed for a full shift cycle, whether for a home on a variable tariff or a commercial site optimizing against peak-hour rates.

Related terms

Time-of-Use (TOU): the tariff structure that creates the price windows load shifting exploits

Peak Shaving: the complementary strategy that reduces demand spikes rather than moving when energy is drawn

Self-consumption: a related strategy that prioritizes on-site solar use, often paired with load shifting on the same system

Explore the Genixgreen product range to see LiFePO4 systems sized for home and commercial load-shifting schedules

Back to the Energy Storage Glossary

Sources

U.S. Department of Energy, Office of Electricity: Energy Storage (grid-scale battery storage, load management, and storage economics). https://www.energy.gov/oe/energy-storage

",
